Zakat, which means growth, purification, and blessing, is one of the five pillars of Islam and a financial act of worship. It aims to preserve social balance and ensure the well-being and continuity of society. By recognizing that the less fortunate have a rightful share in the wealth of the affluent, zakat strengthens social solidarity and helps improve the living standards of those in need.
In religious terms, zakat refers to giving a specific portion of one’s wealth, for the sake of Allah, to individuals who are legally eligible to receive it. In the Qur'an, it is stated:
“Establish prayer and give zakat…”
It is also clearly specified that zakat is prescribed for the poor, the needy, zakat administrators, those whose hearts are to be reconciled, captives, debtors, those striving in the cause of Allah, and stranded travelers (9:60).
Zakat may be delivered directly to eligible recipients or entrusted to a trustworthy intermediary, whether an individual or an organization, provided that it is distributed according to the guidelines set forth in the Qur’an.
Through your zakat donations, you can bring hope to orphans, those struggling with hunger, victims of war or natural disasters, and all individuals in need, becoming a source of lasting الخير and compassion in their lives.
